The Dick Powell Show
The Courtmartial of Captain Wycliff (11 December 1962)

Appearing as Jack Doffer

Broadcast 11 December 1962 on the NBC television network.

Synopsis by curator@jmdigitalscrapbook.com:

Joseph Closter (Martin Brandt), a convicted German spy who worked for the U.S. Government during World War II and sold our atomic secrets to the enemy, has served his ten-year prison term and is now set to return to Germany, where he will no doubt go to work for the Communists and turn over additional U.S. secrets. Patriotic U.S. citizens are outraged. There seems nothing anyone can do to prevent him from leaving. Legally, he cannot be detained.

As Closter and his wife leave their hotel and prepare to climb into a taxicab to take them to the ship bound for Germany, a shot rings out and Closter falls dead.

Captain John Wycliff (Edward Andrews), a decorated war hero and now a professor of political and military science at a leading University, is quickly charged as the murderer. It was his shotgun found at the scene of the crime.

There follows a tense and nerve-wracking trial, where one witness after another delivers damning testimony and is then discredited by the Defense. Is the Captain as innocent as he maintains or is he really a master executioner, able to kill with impugnity, using the espionage training he received during the war? And what of the witnesses favorable to the defense -- are they trying to protect a wrongfully accused hero or being used as pawns in his nefarious scheme?
