The Interns (8 August 1962)

Appearing as Dr. Lew Worship

Synopsis from the Columbia Pressbook:

The Interns is a drama of the private and professional lives of young doctors during their frenzied, sleepless, all-important year of interning. John Otis smashes his dream of a medical career when he illegally helps Lisa Cardigan, a pregnant model with whom he is in love. Lew Worship, who delivers his first baby just before Didi's New Years' Eve party at which nurses and interns release their long-pent tensions, is attracted to Gloria, a student nurse. Considine, an opportunist, tries to use an older nurse to help him become associated with an important psychiatrist, while he is carrying on a torrid romance with Mildred, wealthy and spoiled socialite. Sid Lackland believes money is just about the most important thing in the world, until a patient's tragedy transforms him into a dedicated doctor. Mado, attractive European woman doctor, wins her fight to become a surgeon despite the prejudices of Dr. Riccio, head of the hospital's surgery department. The "mercy-slaying" of a long-suffering patient almost destroys all of the interns, as well as kindly Dr. Wohl, the hospital's understanding medical supervisor.

Additional Information from the Pressbook

Some of the genius of his celebrated parents undoubtedly has rubbed off on James MacArthur. Son of actress Helen Hayes and the late playwright journalist Charles MacArthur, young MacArthur is proving to be a talented actor and he has even made some tentative beginnings as a writer.

MacArthur has starred in such films as Kidnapped, Third Man on the Mountain, Swiss Family Robinson, and The Light in the Forest. Currently, he plays Dr. Lew Worship in the Columbia Pictures release, The Interns.

MacArthur considers this his first mature role. As one of The Interns, MacArthur is called upon to deliver a baby, have a love affair with Stefanie Powers, console the wife of a long-suffering patient, and make the most difficult decision of his life: whether to turn his friend and roommate in to the hospital authorities for the theft of drugs.
