The Love Boat
Next Door Wife (8 December 1979)

Appearing as Chet Hanson

Broadcast 8 December 1979 on the ABC television network.

Chet Hanson (James MacArthur) and his girlfriend Kim Patterson (Susan Buckner) arrive on board the Love Boat, gleefully anticipating a romantic cruise. However, before the ship can depart, Carol (Joanna Pettet), Chet's soon-to-be-ex-wife, appears bearing divorce papers which she insists Chet must sign immediately. He does so, only too happy to see the last of Carol.

His happiness is short-lived, though, when Carol announces that she, too, will be sailing on the Love Boat. Somehow, no matter where Chet and Kim are, even in the privacy of their own cabin, Carol is never far behind. Their first night at dinner, she is at the next table; later that evening, she arrives at their cabin with a tale of having been approached by an attractive man at the bar. Having been married to Chet for so long, she explains, she is out of touch with current dating practices. Much to Chet's annoyance, she begins to pepper Kim with questions and seek advice.

Later, she appears as Chet and Kim are enjoying a relaxing drink in the bar. She shows Chet a piece of string she has carried with her ever since their first date. Explaining that she'd kept it to remind her of something important about Chet, but that since they are now divorcing she will no longer need it, she gives it to him, refusing to tell him of what exactly it had served to remind her. She then flounces off for as assignation with her new conquest, the stranger from the night before.

Back in their cabin that evening, while Kim fumes alone in bed, Chet paces the room's small confines, fretting and worrying that Carol's new companion might take advantage of or hurt her. He finally joins Kim in bed, but still can't rid himself of his concern for Carol. Suddenly, there is a knock at the door.

It's Carol, who rushes to Chet and confesses that she still loves him and wants him back. Overjoyed, Chet admits that he feels the same way. As he and Carol embrace and prepare to leave the cabin, Kim demands to know where they are going.

Grinning ecstatically, Chet replies, "Home."
