An American in Kuwait aka Kuwait - The Way It Was (c. Spring 1984) Appearing as Host/Narrator This documentary was made prior to the Gulf War and took a look at life in Kuwait. After the start of the Gulf War, it was repackaged and retitled, and aired many times. The following synopsis was obtained from the president of the company which produced and distributed the documentary and is used with his kind permission: "James MacArthur hosts a look at the Arabian Gulf country of Kuwait. In the mid 1980s, MacArthur, accompanied by a production team put together by White Mountain Entertainment, visited the country during the annual celebration of the Kuwait National Day. Over a period of two weeks the production team covered the entire country, from the Iraqi border, where fighter jets buzzed the crew during the production of a segment on nomads that was being shot at a Bedouin camp. MacArthur also rode to the top of a 180-foot off-shore drilling rig in the Arabian Gulf, where he could see explosions in Iraq and Iran, two countries who were, at that time, at war. Also featured in the show are visits to the winding Souk market, where a wide variety of goods were on display, as well as the famed Kuwait Gold Market, where gold jewelry is purchased by the pound. Surprisingly, the cameras also caught a beautiful ice show performed in the Kuwait City Ice Arena by a group of Italian national champions mixed with local Kuwaiti children. The opening of the show features MacArthur and a young Kuwaiti boy on a roller coaster at a local amusement park. In order to record the necessary video needed for the opening, MacArthur rode the roller coaster 16 consecutive times. The young Arab lad got sick on the 15th ride. At the time that MacArthur visited the country, Hawaii Five-O was the most popular show on Kuwaiti television. The officials and residents of Kuwait made the two week visit most enjoyable for everyone associated with the program." To view a complete gallery of screen captures from this episode click here. |
